“The Black Cat”

By Aarav Reddy Chilukuri, Grade 6 winner

Have you ever wondered why black cats are considered bad luck? Well, what if I told you that one black cat actually disappeared for over 1,000 years, but somehow came back without aging a single day?

It all started in a small town called Black Creek. There was a boy named Ethan who lived with his parents in an old house near the woods. One rainy Friday night, Ethan was playing video games when he heard a scratching noise coming from his window.

At first, he ignored it. But the scratching got louder and louder until he finally decided to look outside.

There was a black cat sitting on the windowsill.

The cat had completely black fur, except for one small white spot on its chest. But the strangest thing was its eyes. One was green, and the other was bright yellow.

Ethan opened the window and the cat immediately jumped inside.

"Where did you come from?" Ethan thought.

The cat just stared at him.

Ethan decided to keep it for the night since it was raining so hard outside. He gave it some food and named it Shadow. But what Ethan didn't know was that this cat had a secret that nobody in the town could explain.

The next morning, Ethan woke up and noticed Shadow sitting in front of his bedroom mirror. The cat wasn't moving at all.

But when Ethan looked at the mirror, he noticed something terrifying.

Shadow wasn't in the reflection.

Ethan rubbed his eyes and looked again. The cat was clearly sitting right there, but the mirror showed nothing.

He thought maybe he was just tired, so he went downstairs to eat breakfast.

Later that day, Ethan decided to research black cats on his computer. He searched for strange cats with different colored eyes and found an old newspaper article from 1923.

The headline said, "MYSTERIOUS BLACK CAT DISAPPEARS AFTER OWNER VANISHES."

Ethan clicked on the article and saw a picture of a black cat.

His heart almost stopped.

It looked exactly like Shadow.

Same black fur. Same white spot. Same green and yellow eyes.

According to the article, the cat belonged to a scientist named Dr. Walter Reed, who had been experimenting with something called time distortion. The scientist believed he could create a machine that could stop time for living creatures.

But one night, his entire laboratory disappeared without a trace. The only thing witnesses saw was a black cat running out of the building.

Ethan thought it was probably just a coincidence.

Until he read the last sentence.

"The cat was last seen near the woods of Black Creek."

Suddenly, Ethan heard a loud crash from downstairs.

He ran down the stairs and found Shadow standing next to a broken clock. But something even weirder was happening.

Every clock in the house had stopped at exactly 3:17.

Even Ethan's phone showed 3:17, and the numbers weren't changing.

Then everything outside froze.

A bird was stuck in the middle of flying. Rain drops hung in the air without falling. Even a car driving down the street had completely stopped.

Ethan was the only person who could move.

Well, except for Shadow.

The cat slowly walked toward the front door and scratched it three times.

Ethan opened it, and Shadow ran toward the woods.

He didn't know why, but he followed him.

After walking for almost ten minutes, Ethan saw something hidden behind a group of trees. It was an old building covered in vines and broken windows.

On the front door was a rusty metal sign.

DR. WALTER REED — PRIVATE LABORATORY

Ethan couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The laboratory from the newspaper was standing right in front of him.

Shadow walked inside, and Ethan followed.

The building was filled with strange machines, dusty books, and hundreds of clocks. Every single clock showed 3:17.

In the middle of the room was a giant machine with a glowing blue circle.

Next to it was a notebook.

Ethan opened the notebook and started reading.

"Experiment 47. The subject has successfully survived the time distortion process. However, the subject is no longer aging and can now move between frozen moments."

Ethan turned the page.

"The subject appears to be a black cat. Unfortunately, the experiment has caused an unexpected problem. Every time the cat becomes frightened, time temporarily stops."

Suddenly, Ethan understood everything.

Shadow wasn't a ghost.

He wasn't a magical cat either.

He was a science experiment that had somehow survived for over 100 years.

But then Ethan noticed one final sentence written in red ink.

"WARNING: If the subject returns to the laboratory, the machine will automatically activate and trap everything nearby in a permanent time loop."

Ethan slowly looked up.

Shadow was already standing inside the glowing blue circle.

The machine began making a loud buzzing noise.

"SHADOW! GET OUT!" Ethan screamed.

But it was too late.

The blue light flashed so brightly that Ethan had to cover his eyes.

Then everything went black.

When Ethan opened his eyes, he was back in his bedroom.

It was Friday night.

Rain was hitting the window.

His video game was still on.

And then he heard something.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

Ethan slowly turned toward the window.

There was a black cat sitting outside.

One green eye.

One yellow eye.

A tiny white spot on its chest.

But this time, there was something different.

The cat was holding a small piece of paper in its mouth.

Ethan opened the window and took the paper.

On it was a message written in shaky handwriting.

"THIS IS LOOP NUMBER 347. DO NOT LET THE CAT INSIDE."

Ethan stared at the message in horror.

Then he heard his own voice coming from behind him.

"Too late."

He turned around.

Standing in the doorway was another Ethan.

And he was holding the exact same black cat.
